spacerExploring the ultimate structure of matter and the fundamental principles of nature by particle physics, also the birth, evolution and end of the universe by astrophysics are inevitable assignments imposed on the human beings. In order to study these subjects, experimental approaches in particle physics is making progress towards the frontier for two different research fields with the opposite side energy. One is the ultra-high energy side, which is realized by high-energy particle accelerators. The other is the ultra-low energy side by large volume and high sensitive particle detectors equipped in a deep underground. The KamLAND experiment leads the ultra-low energy frontier and promotes the research for the most important unsolved subjects on particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology studying neutrino or anti-neutrino reactions.

spacerTo perform these researches, we constructed a 1000-ton liquid scintillator detector (KamLAND; Kamioka Liquid scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector), which is based on characteristics of liquid scintillator; excellent light output and discrimination ability for anti-neutrino reactions. KamLAND is located at the site of the earlier Kamiokande with a rock overburden about 1000m under the ground, in the Kamioka Mine in Kamioka Town, Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. The inside of the detector is ultra-low radioactive background environment, which has been achieved by introducing new technology. Thus, KamLAND will be able to detect reactions caused by ultra-low energy neutrinos of the order of 100keV.

spacerIn the 1000-ton of liquid scintillator of KamLAND, the level of environmental radioactivity is held on 100 million - 10 billion times less than ground levels. Under this condition, it made possible to detect low-energy reactions, which had been impossible before because of severe backgrounds caused by the environmental radioactivity. KamLAND pioneers new fields besides elementary particle physics, astrophysics, and geophysics. Particularly, it is expected that new research tools will be offered to both the fundamental and applied research in engineering, biology, and nuclear medicine by the detection of luminescence phenomena, such as the luminescence in the organism and the cell, also very small amount of radioactivities in the living thing and the material of the structure.
