Q1. Please tell us about your country China.
I was born in Beijing, and have lived in various places such as Dalian, Qingdao, Yanji, and Seoul due to my family’s work. Beijing is a large city that has developed while preserving its traditional culture, and Dalian and Qingdao are vibrant cities located by the sea. On the other hand, Yanji is a small town with a slower pace of life.Among these, I spent the longest time in Dalian, but the place I especially consider my hometown is Yanji. Yanji is a small city in Northeast China that is home to many ethnic minorities, primarily the Korean ethnic group. Because of this, signs and menus in the city are often written in both Chinese and Korean, giving a natural atmosphere of multicultural coexistence.
Yanji’s charm lies not in specific tourist spots, but in the overall atmosphere of the city and the way of life of its people. As a multicultural society, simply walking around the town lets you feel its unique vibe, which I believe is the best recommendation itself. By the way, near Yanji there is a volcano called Changbai Mountain, which has a very beautiful lake called Tianchi (Heavenly Lake). Also, close to Yanji is a town called Hunchun, where you can see China, North Korea, and Russia all at once. It’s a very rare place, so if you have the chance, I highly recommend visiting.

私は北京生まれで、家族の仕事の関係で大連や青島、延吉、ソウルなどさまざまな場所で生活した経験があります。北京は伝統文化を保ちながら発展している大都市で、大連と青島は海に面した活気のある都市です。一方、延吉は生活のリズムがゆっくりとした小さな町です。その中で一番長く過ごしたのは大連ですが、私にとって特に故郷と感じるのは延吉です。延吉は中国の東北地方にある町で、朝鮮族をはじめとした少数民族が多く暮らしています。そのため、街の看板やメニューは中国語と韓国語の両方で書かれていることが多く、異文化が自然に共存している雰囲気を感じられます。
延吉は、特定の観光スポットというより、町全体の空気や人々の暮らしが魅力です。多文化共生の社会ということで、街を歩くだけで独特の雰囲気を感じられるので、それ自体が一番のおすすめだと思います。ちなみに、延吉の近くには長白山という火山があり、天池と呼ばれているとても美しい池があります。また、延吉の近くに琿春という町があり、そこでは一目で中国・北朝鮮・ロシアの三か国を見渡せるスポットがあります。とても珍しい場所なので、機会があればぜひ訪れてみてください。
Q2. Please tell us about your hobbies.
I have various hobbies, but among them, I especially love classical music. I have been playing the flute since I was a child, and during my undergraduate years, I was active in the Tohoku University Symphony Orchestra. My favorite composer is Sibelius, and performing Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 at the regular concert before graduation remains a very fond memory for me.What fascinates me about classical music is that it condenses human emotions, the beauty of nature, and sometimes even the power to inspire life. There are pieces that move the heart on a grand scale, as well as those that gently accompany you, and every time I listen, I discover something new. In particular, music knows no borders, and even when my Japanese wasn’t fluent, I was able to connect with many Japanese friends through music. This experience has made me deeply appreciate the power of music.
Since coming to Sendai, I often attend the regular concerts of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra as a way to refresh myself. Listening to live performances allows me to directly feel the energy of music, which is very stimulating.
❲日本語訳❳ Q2. 趣味について聞かせて下さい。
趣味はいろいろありますが、その中で特にクラシック音楽が大好きです。小さい頃からずっとフルートを吹いていて、学部時代は東北大学交響楽団で活動していました。一番好きな作曲家はシベリウスで、卒業前の定期演奏会でシベリウスの交響曲第2番を演奏できたのはとてもいい思い出です。クラシック音楽の魅力は、その中に人間の感情や自然の美しさ、そして時には生きる力のようなものが凝縮されているところだと思います。壮大なスケールで心を揺さぶられる曲もあれば、静かに寄り添ってくれるような曲もあって、聴くたびに新しい発見があります。特に、音楽には国境がなく、日本語が十分に通じなかった頃でも、音楽を通して多くの日本の友人とつながることができました。そうした経験からも音楽の力の大きさを感じています。
仙台に来てからは、気分転換もかねて仙台フィルの定期演奏会によく足を運んでいます。生の演奏を聴くと、音楽のエネルギーを直接感じられてとても刺激になります。
Q3. How did you get into studying Physics?
To be honest, I never imagined that I would pursue a career in physics. Since I was a child, I have had a strong interest in Earth science and came to Japan with the desire to study geophysics, focusing especially on seismology. However, when it came time to choose my department in university, due to some circumstances, I was unable to enter the department of geophysics and was instead assigned to the physics department.Of course, I was disappointed at that time, but as I studied physics, I became increasingly fascinated by its depth and appeal. Still, I never gave up on my passion for Earth science, and I have always hoped to conduct research that contributes to Earth science using the methods of physics. Fortunately, I have been able to engage in geoneutrino research at RCNS, and I find it rewarding that through this elementary particle, I can contribute not only to particle physics but also to Earth science.
Although my path has turned out different from what I originally imagined, I am now very satisfied and lead a fulfilling life.
❲日本語訳❳ Q3. どのように物理に興味を持つようになりましたか？
正直に言うと、もともと物理学の道に進むとは全く思っていませんでした。小さい頃から地球科学に強い興味があって、地震学を中心に地球物理学を研究したいという思いで日本に来ました。しかし、学部の学科配属の際に何かの事情で地球物理学コースに進めず、物理学科に配属されました。その時はもちろん落ち込みましたが、物理学を勉強するうちにその奥深さや面白さにどんどん引き込まれていきました。しかし、地球科学への思いは諦めきれず、物理学の手法を使って地球科学に貢献できる研究ができたらいいなと考え続けてきました。幸いにして、RCNSで地球ニュートリノの研究に携わることができまして、この素粒子の力を使って素粒子物理学だけでなく地球科学にも貢献できることにやりがいを感じています。
こうして当初の想像とは違う道を歩んでいますが、今は非常に満足していて、充実した日々を過ごしています。
Q4. What brought you to study abroad? Why did you choose Japan as the destination to study abroad?
As I mentioned earlier, I originally wanted to study geophysics with a focus on seismology, so I chose Japan as my destination for studying abroad because it is a country prone to earthquakes. Japan is close to China geographically and culturally, so I also felt it would be a safe and comfortable place to live. Additionally, the Japanese people are very polite and I was drawn to their character.Having grown up in a multicultural environment myself, I aspire to work on an international stage in the future. I believe that my study abroad experience in Japan is a very important step toward realizing that dream.
❲日本語訳❳ Q4. なぜ留学しようと思いましたか？留学先として日本を選んだ理由はありますか？
さきほども話したように、もともとは地震学を中心に地球物理学を研究したくて、地震大国の日本を留学先に選びました。日本は中国に近くて文化も似ているので、安心して暮らせると思ったのも理由の一つです。加えて、日本の人はとても礼儀正しくて、その人柄にも惹かれました。私はもともと多文化共生の環境で育ったこともあって、将来は国際的な舞台で活躍したいと思っています。そうした夢を実現するためにも、日本での留学経験は非常に大切な一歩だと感じています。
Q5. What kind of research are you doing currently in RCNS?
Currently, I am working under Professor Watanabe, focusing on geoneutrinos, particularly involved in a project called Ocean Bottom Detector (OBD). I have had a strong interest in Earth science since I was a child, and after entering university, I also became passionate about programming. Through simulations, I study how geoneutrinos can help unravel the mysteries of Earth science.In addition, I actively participate in the KamLAND experiment led by RCNS, where I am also learning about hardware through hands-on work. There is still much for me to learn, but I am striving to contribute to the research as much as I can.

今は渡辺先生のもとで地球ニュートリノを中心に、特に海洋底ニュートリノ検出器（OBD）というプロジェクトに携わっています。私は小さい頃から地球科学に強い興味を持っていて、大学に入ってからプログラミングにも夢中になったので、シミュレーションを通して地球ニュートリノがどのように地球科学の謎に迫れるかを研究しています。また、RCNSが主導しているKamLAND実験にも積極的に参加しており、現場での作業を通じてハードウェアの知識も学んでいます。まだまだ学ぶことが多いですが、少しでも研究に貢献できるよう努力しています。
Q6. How do you study Japanese language?
I decided to study abroad in Japan when I was in my second year of high school, and I spent one year studying Japanese using textbooks. However, since I had few opportunities to speak, when I came to Japan I often had trouble expressing what I wanted to say and faced many difficulties in daily life. Even using English, there were many situations where I couldn’t communicate well, so I realized that if I wanted to live in Japan, mastering Japanese was absolutely essential. I made a serious effort to study Japanese by trying not to be shy and speaking with Japanese people as much as possible.After entering university, I actively talked with friends in my club activities and research center to practice conversation a lot. I may have caused some trouble for my friends, but thanks to them, I feel that I gradually became able to speak Japanese better.
❲日本語訳❳ Q6. 日本語は、どのように勉強していますか？
日本に留学することを決めたのは高校2年生の頃で、それから1年間はテキストを読んで日本語を勉強しました。しかし、話す機会がなかったため、日本に来てから言いたいことがうまく伝わらず、生活で困ることも多くありました。英語を使ってもなかなか通じない場面が多かったので、やはり日本で生活したいならば日本語が不可欠だなと思って、普段はなるべく恥ずかしがらずに日本人と日本語で話すことで日本語の勉強に本気で取り組みました。大学に入ってからは、部活や研究室の友達に積極的に話しかけてたくさん会話の練習をしました。友達にはちょっと迷惑をかけたかもしれませんが、おかげでだんだん上手く話せるようになったと実感しています。
Q7. How is the life in Japan?
In Japan, I find the food very delicious, the people polite, and the lifestyle comfortable. Of course, no matter how much my Japanese improves, I sometimes feel the cultural differences and language barriers, which can lead to feelings of loneliness. Recently, those feelings have gradually lessened, but it was truly difficult when I couldn’t speak Japanese well. Now, I spend my days fulfillingly by dedicating myself to research.❲日本語訳❳ Q7. 日本での生活はどうですか？
日本では料理がとてもおいしくて、人々が礼儀正しくて、生活しやすいと感じています。もちろん、どんなに日本語が上手になっても、文化の違いや言葉の壁を感じることがあって、時々孤独を感じることもあります。最近は、そういった気持ちは少しずつ減ってきましたが、日本語がうまく話せなかった頃は本当に大変でした。今は、研究に打ち込むことで毎日を充実して過ごしています。
Q8. Lastly, please tell us your future goal.
My immediate goal is to become more proficient in both Japanese and English. Recently, I have been focusing too much on research, so I also want to pay more attention to my personal life. I hope to maintain a good balance by working on cooking for myself, attending driving school, building relationships, playing musical instruments, and traveling.In the long term, after completing my master’s program, I plan to continue into the doctoral program. I aim to leverage my study abroad experience and multilingual abilities to contribute to research in particle physics and Earth science across different countries, and ultimately become a distinguished researcher.
❲日本語訳❳ Q8. 最後に、将来の目標を教えて下さい。
近い目標は、日本語と英語をもっと上手に話せるようになることです。また、最近は研究に打ち込みすぎているので、生活面も大切にしたいと思っています。自炊や自動車学校、恋愛、楽器、旅行など、バランスよく頑張りたいです。将来的には、修士課程修了後にそのまま博士課程へ進んで、留学経験やマルチリンガルの強みを活かして、国境を越えた世界各地で素粒子物理学や地球科学の研究に貢献して、立派な研究者になりたいと考えています。
