 International symposium "Frontier of Understanding Earth’s Interior and Dynamics"

Tohoku University has been implementing the visiting and residential research programme, called the "Tohoku Forum for Creativity(TFC)". The TFC aims to create the pioneering research areas by openly inviting themes for intensive discussion through the international symposium series, public events and support for long-term stay’s researchers.

The theme "Frontier of Understanding Earth's Interior and Dynamics", which is organised by Professor Kunio Inoue and Assistant Professor Hiroko Watanabe(represetitive) of the RCNS together with researchers in the field of the Earth Sciences, was selected as a issue for the year 2022. It aims to build and grow an interdisciplinary community in order to better clarify the new approaches for the key issues in the Earth Sciences.

As part of this programme, the internationl symposium was held at the Katahira campus of the Tohoku University on the 8th and 9th of August. There were about 30 participants in-person and 40 participants online. In addition to the field of particle physics which is mainly concerned with the observation of the gio-neutrinos, there was a lively discussion on connectivity to common scientific interests with the participants from a variety of fields, such as mantle excavation, geochemistry, geophysics, geology, seismology, marine engineering, marine microbiology, etc. It is planned to hold symposia, public lectures and student lecture series under the same theme during 2022.
