KamLAND-Zen 800 was completed to prepare for KamLAND2.

  • News

KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment, which had been operated with 750 kg of Xe aiming to search for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay, was completed on January 12, 2024 after about 4-year data taking since it was started in 2019.

In the published result in 2023, the most stringent constraint on the 0νββ decay half-life was provided and was the first search in the inverted mass ordering region.

We are preparing for starting "KamLAND2" experiment with improvement of the detector performance in order to discover the 0νββ decay. This project was selected as the basic concept for the promotion of major academic research projects (Roadmap 2023) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Moreover, the Kamioka Extremely Rare event and NEutrino research Laboratory (KERNEL) will be established as an inter-university collaboration with Osaka University to promote international joint research programs. The super cleanroom, which will be constructed in the Kamioka mine, will be a research hub of our laboratory
