The Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University "Atsuto Suzuki", who also had worked as the Former Director of Research Center for Neutrino Science), was chosen as a "Person of Cultural Merit" in 2021. The "Person of Cultural Merit" is awarded to the persons who have made the outstanding contributions to the improvement and development of culture in Japan.
In the field of particle physics, he was the first person in the world who observed the oscillation phenomenon of reactor neutrino by using the newly developed KamLAND experimental facility, has made outstanding achievements and a great contribution to the development of this field, such as proving that neutrinos have mass. His outstanding, world-leading achievements in the field of particle physics were recognized, which are highly significant.
The award ceremony will be held in Tokyo on 4 November.
